Grinding for Poker Success

There is a unique poker strategy being used in the poker world that would have been laughed at years ago. It’s not being laughed at anymore because it usually produces winning results. Are you going to make a fast fortune with this new style of grinding? No. You will, however, make money in the long run and slowly build up your bankroll.

Grinding is more suited for cash games, but can be used in poker tournaments as well. In a tournament, it’s a better strategy to use if you’re just aiming to make the final table, and not playing to win the entire event. If you do happen to make the final table, you can then switch to aggressive mode. You will have already established a tight image and will have an opportunity to steal some big blinds.

If you play poker -- online poker or live games -- you’ve seen the grinders before. They wait and wait and then strike when least expected. Then … they wait again. They’ve always been there, but now they have an interesting twist on their grinding style. Let’s look at one example: pocket KK. Usually, the saying goes that when it comes to high pocket pairs, you win a little or lose a lot. This is because people must bet big on the flop to protect their hand. What some grinders are doing now is limping in with high pocket pairs (not to limp-raise). They figure if they hit their set on the flop, nobody will detect it and they’ll win a huge pot. If they miss, they’ll make a small bet and see where everyone is strength-wise. If danger is out there, they will fold. This strategy reverses the ‘win small, lose big’ high pocket pair theory. With this approach, you’re either winning big or losing small. It might sound crazy, but it produces consistent results.

Grinding is also beneficial because it allows you to stay in the game longer, which in turn leads you to seeing more hands and improving your knowledge of the game and players. Of course, it’s also beneficial to your bankroll. Your losses will usually be small and your wins will be marginal. In addition to that, grinding is the best style to keep you from getting emotional. That alone makes you a favorite from the start.

Consider grinding as a successful, long-term approach to poker success.
